The Art & Crafts movement is an artistic trend that emerged in England in the mid-19th century and lasted until the early 20th century. It was created as a reaction against industrialization and the proliferation of poorly made manufactured products. Artists in this movement advocated for the valorization of craftsmanship and the creation of hand-made products, combining aesthetic beauty and functionality. One of the founders of this movement is William Morris, who founded the company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co in 1861. He was a designer, poet, and writer and worked to promote a return to traditional craft methods for the production of decorative products. Other famous artists associated with this movement include John Ruskin, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Walter Crane, C.R.Ashbee, and C.F.A. Voysey. The Art & Crafts movement had a significant impact on architecture, design, and decorative art, and has influenced many subsequent art movements such as Art Nouveau and modernism. It continues to inspire creators today who seek to reconcile aesthetic quality and functionality in their work.
William Morris was a 19th century British artist, designer, writer, and socialist. Born in Walthamstow, England in 1834, Morris studied medieval history and English literature at Oxford University before becoming one of the main figures in the arts and crafts movement, a movement that aimed to promote craftsmanship and reform the interior design industry. Morris founded the company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later known as Morris & Co.) in 1861, which produced high-quality textiles, wallpaper, furniture, and many other design products. In addition to his achievements in design, Morris was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous poems, novels, and essays on art, architecture, and society. In addition to his artistic work, Morris was also a committed political activist, actively participating in the socialist movement and working to create a more equitable and egalitarian society. He died in Hammersmith, England in 1896.
